MIAMI (March 24, 2014) – The United Way Center for Financial Stability, operated by Branches, received a $10,000 grant from State Farm to expand its financial literacy and homeownership trainings in 2014. The Center will utilize the funds to help support 100 trainings and workshops all throughout Miami Dade County, including community sites, congregations, employers and other locations to help ensure easy access to financial education.

Last year, State Farm’s grant helped support 144 trainings, where Center staff empowered more than 3,800 members of our community with budgeting, credit and debt counseling, employment services, homeownership assistance and more.

“I gained control of my finances and my credit,” said Lucille Mellerson, who first met one of the Center’s financial coaches at an offsite financial literacy workshop. “Through the seminar and one-on-one visits with my financial coach, my credit score has soared 173 points to a 780. I’ve also significantly lowered the interest rate on my car and am now a good candidate for homeownership.”

State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship grants support community-based programs in three areas: safety, community development and education. “State Farm is a proud partner of United Way, and we are committed to helping families pave a path to financial independence and homeownership,” said Jose Soto, State Farm Community Specialist for South Florida.
